Mixing Basics: Balance Before Anything Else
Mixing has a reputation as a plugin problem — as if the right EQ curve or the right compressor setting is what separates a good mix from a bad one. It isn't. Most of what makes a mix work is decided before a single plugin gets touched, using nothing but faders and pan knobs. Get the balance right first and the rest of the process gets dramatically easier. Skip it and no amount of processing later will fully fix it.
Static Balance First
Before touching EQ, compression, or any effect, set every track's fader to a level where you can hear it clearly against everything else — nothing buried, nothing jumping out unnecessarily. This is called a static balance, and it should be done with faders only, song playing from a natural starting point like the first chorus or the fullest section, not the sparse intro. A surprising amount of what people call "mixing" is really just this step done carefully: bass and kick sitting together without fighting, vocal audible over the band without being pasted on top of it, rhythm guitar present without swallowing everything else. If the static balance is wrong, EQ and compression are just going to be corrections applied on top of a bad foundation, and you'll be chasing problems that a fader move would have solved in five seconds.
Panning — and the Mono Caveat
Panning places a track across the stereo field, from full left to full right, and it does real work: it separates instruments that occupy similar frequency ranges by giving them different positions, so two guitars aren't just stacked on top of each other in the center fighting for the same space. Spreading things out left and right gives a mix width and lets individual parts be heard more clearly.
The caveat is mono compatibility. Plenty of listening happens through a single speaker — a phone, a Bluetooth speaker in someone's kitchen, a single-speaker PA at a smaller gig. When a stereo mix collapses to mono, everything sums into one signal: two instruments panned apart just land on top of each other again. Nothing cancels, but the separation and width you built disappears, and a mix that felt spacious in stereo can suddenly feel crowded. Real cancellation is a different problem, caused by phase-shifted duplicated content rather than panning — a stereo widener effect, a chorus or doubler, or two mics on the same source that aren't time-aligned. Those create two versions of a similar signal slightly out of phase with each other, and summing them to mono can make parts of that signal partially cancel out and thin or disappear. Check your mix in mono periodically — a mono button in your software, or literally covering one ear at a small PA — so both problems get caught before an audience hears them.
Reference Tracks
A reference track is a professionally mixed song, in a similar style to what you're working on, that you play alongside your own mix to compare. It's one of the fastest ways to catch problems your ears have stopped noticing after hours of staring at the same song — is your low end too big, is your vocal buried, does your mix sound thin next to something that was mixed by someone with fresh ears and better monitoring than the room you're working in. Switching back and forth between your mix and the reference, matched roughly in volume, tells you things that soloing individual tracks never will, because it puts your mix back in context against something you already know sounds good.
Bus Thinking: Group Your Drums and Vocals
A bus groups related tracks together into a single channel you can control as one — all your drum mics routed to a drum bus, all your backing vocals routed to a vocal bus. Bus thinking changes how you approach a mix: instead of treating eight drum mics as eight unrelated decisions, you can balance them individually first and then treat the whole kit as one instrument, adjusting its overall level, compression, or tone as a group. This is also where glue compression across a bus makes sense — making a kit or a vocal stack feel like one cohesive performance instead of a pile of separate tracks that happen to be playing at the same time.
EQ and Compression Come After Balance, Loudness Comes Last
Reaching for EQ or compression before the static balance is set is fixing the wrong problem. A vocal that's too quiet doesn't need an EQ boost — it needs its fader raised. A kick and bass fighting for space might need panning or balance decisions before they need surgical EQ. Once the balance, panning, and bus structure are solid, EQ and compression become refinement tools, cleaning up specific issues and adding character to a mix that already works.
Loudness — pushing the overall mix up with a limiter to compete with other music — comes last, after everything else is decided, and never as a substitute for a good mix. A mix that only sounds good because it's loud will fall apart the moment it's compared at equal volume to something else. Get the balance, the space, and the dynamics right first; loudness is the final polish, not the fix.
