EQ Fundamentals: Carving Space in the Mix
An equalizer boosts or cuts specific frequency ranges in a sound. That's the whole mechanism. The skill isn't in knowing what an EQ does — it's in learning to hear which range is causing a problem and knowing whether the fix is a boost, a cut, or leaving it alone. Once you can identify a frequency range by ear, EQ stops being guesswork and starts being a tool you reach for on purpose.
The Frequency Ranges, By Ear
Numbers are useful once you already know what you're listening for, but they're a bad starting point. Learn what each range sounds like first.
- Lows (roughly 20–250Hz) — the weight and thump you feel as much as hear: kick drum punch, bass guitar body, the low end of a rhythm guitar. Too much here sounds boomy or muddy. Too little sounds thin.
- Low-mids (250–500Hz) — warmth and body, but also where "boxy" and "muddy" live. A guitar or vocal with too much energy here sounds like it's coming through a cardboard tube.
- Mids (500Hz–2kHz) — where most instruments live and where the ear is most sensitive. This range carries the character of a voice and the honk of an overdriven guitar. Too much here gets fatiguing fast; too little sounds hollow or distant.
- High-mids (2–6kHz) — presence, clarity, and consonants in a vocal. This is also where harshness and sibilance show up. A small boost here can make a vocal cut through a mix; too much turns it brittle.
- Highs (6kHz and up) — air, sparkle, cymbal shimmer, the sense of "openness" at the top of a sound. Too much sounds hissy or sharp; too little sounds dull or muffled.
Cut Before You Boost
The instinct when something sounds wrong is to boost the range you think is missing. Resist it. Cutting the range that's causing the problem almost always sounds more natural than boosting everything else to compensate, and it doesn't add extra gain that can push you toward clipping or feedback. If a vocal sounds muddy, the fix usually isn't "add more highs" — it's "cut the low-mids that are actually causing the mud." Boosting is for polish, applied in small amounts once the problems are already cut out. Cutting is for problems.
The High-Pass Filter Is Your Workhorse
A high-pass filter removes everything below a chosen frequency and lets everything above it through — it's a cut, not a boost, which is exactly why it's the single most useful EQ move available. Almost nothing except a kick drum and a bass guitar needs information below 80–100Hz, and every instrument that doesn't need it is still generating some low-frequency noise: handling noise, stage rumble, mic proximity boom. Leave that low-end junk in and it eats headroom and muddies everything else without adding anything you can hear. High-pass every channel that isn't kick or bass, as a default habit rather than something you reach for only when there's a problem.
Two Common Fixes: Muddy Vocals and Harsh Guitars
A muddy vocal is almost always a low-mid problem. Find the frequency in the 250–500Hz range where the voice sounds thick or boxy and cut it, rather than boosting the highs to compensate — boosting highs on a muddy vocal just makes it muddy and harsh at the same time. A modest cut around 300–400Hz, combined with a high-pass filter to remove rumble below 100Hz, cleans up most vocal mud without making the voice sound thin.
A harsh electric guitar usually lives in the high-mids. Overdriven and distorted tones build up energy in the 2–4kHz range that gets fatiguing over a full set. A gentle cut there — not a big one, just enough to take the edge off — keeps the tone aggressive without making the audience wince. Chasing harshness by cutting the highs instead just dulls the tone without solving the actual problem.
EQ Live vs EQ In a Mix
Live EQ and mix EQ are solving different problems, even though the tool is the same. Live, EQ exists to fight the room, the PA, and feedback — you're reacting to what's actually happening in that specific space tonight, often making broad cuts to tame a boomy room or ring out a feedback frequency before it howls. It's corrective and situational, and the same channel might need a different EQ setting in a different room next week.
In a mix, EQ exists to create space between instruments so each one is audible without fighting the others — carving out room for a bass guitar and a kick drum to coexist instead of both crowding the same low-end, or making sure a lead guitar can be heard clearly against rhythm guitar without either instrument being drowned out. It's deliberate and can be considered over time. Neither approach is more correct than the other — they're just different jobs for the same tool, in different amounts of time and with different goals.
