Recording Basics: Mics, Rooms and Levels
Recording your first demo doesn't require expensive gear or a treated studio. It requires understanding a handful of decisions that matter far more than the price tag on your microphone: which mic type suits the source, how much the room is shaping what you're capturing, how far to place the mic, and how hot to push your levels. Get those right with modest gear and you'll get a usable, honest recording. Get them wrong with expensive gear and you'll still be fighting the results in every mix afterward.
Dynamic vs Condenser Microphones
A dynamic microphone is rugged, less sensitive, and handles loud sound sources well without distorting — it's the workhorse choice for a guitar amp, a snare drum, or a live vocal on a loud stage where you want the mic to reject some of the surrounding noise. A condenser microphone is more sensitive and captures more detail and higher frequencies, which makes it the better choice for acoustic instruments, quieter vocal performances, and anything where nuance and openness matter more than raw loudness handling. Neither is objectively better — a condenser on a screaming guitar amp will likely distort or capture more room noise than you want, and a dynamic mic on a delicate acoustic guitar part will sound duller and less detailed than the performance deserves. Match the mic type to what you're actually recording rather than defaulting to whichever one is sitting closest.
The Room Matters More Than the Mic
A microphone captures everything in front of it, including the room it's sitting in — the reflections off hard walls, the hum of a fridge in the next room, the boxy resonance of a small untreated space. A great microphone in a bad-sounding room will still capture that bad-sounding room, and no amount of processing afterward fully removes it. Before agonizing over which mic to buy, spend time on simple room treatment: hang blankets or soft furnishings to kill hard reflections, record in the quietest, most acoustically dead space available, and physically move around the room during a test recording to find the spot that sounds least boxy. A modest mic in a decent-sounding room will consistently beat an expensive mic in a bad one.
Distance and the Proximity Effect
How far you place a microphone from the source changes the recording more than most people expect. Close placement captures more direct sound and less room noise, but on many microphones it also triggers the proximity effect — an exaggerated boost in low frequencies the closer a source gets to the mic. That's why a vocalist singing right up against a mic sounds noticeably bassier and warmer than the same vocalist singing a foot back. Proximity effect isn't inherently bad — it's a useful tool for warming up a thin voice — but it becomes a problem when a singer moves back and forth during a performance, causing the low end to swell and shrink unpredictably. Pick a distance, communicate it, and try to keep it consistent through a take.
Tracking Levels: Conservative Beats Hot
When recording, resist the urge to push levels as hot as possible to "use the full range." Modern recording systems have enormous headroom, and a quieter recording with clean, well-placed peaks is far easier to work with than a hot one that clips on the loudest note of an otherwise perfect take — a clipped take usually has to be re-recorded, because clipping distortion can't be undone afterward. Aim for peaks that sit comfortably below where clipping starts, leaving real headroom for the loudest moment of a performance that hasn't happened yet. You can always turn a quiet recording up. You can't undo a clipped one.
Click Tracks, Scratch Tracks and a Minimal First-Demo Chain
A click track is a metronome fed to performers through headphones during recording, keeping every instrument locked to the same tempo even when they're recorded separately — essential once you start layering parts on top of each other, since drift between instruments recorded at different times becomes obvious and hard to fix. A scratch track is a rough, temporary recording — often a guide vocal or a simple guitar part — used as a reference for other musicians to play along to, then usually replaced later with a proper take.
For a first demo, the minimal signal chain is simpler than it looks: one decent mic suited to the source, a mic cable, an audio interface to get that signal into a computer, and recording software to capture it. That's enough to make an honest, listenable demo. Everything else — additional mics, outboard gear, a treated room — is a refinement on top of a chain that already works, not a requirement to get started.
