Reverb and Delay: Putting a Sound in a Space
EQ changes what a sound is made of. Compression changes how its level behaves over time. Reverb and delay do something different from both: they change where the sound appears to be. A dry vocal recorded two inches from a microphone sounds like it is happening two inches from your face, because that is exactly what your ears are being told. Reverb and delay are how you move it — into a room, onto a stage, down a corridor, or somewhere that has never existed.
They are the same idea at two different timescales. Delay is a repeat you can count. Reverb is thousands of repeats arriving so close together that you stop hearing them as separate events and start hearing them as a space.
What Reverb Actually Is
When a sound happens in a room, a small part of it reaches you directly. Everything else hits walls, ceiling, floor, the bar, the crowd — and comes back later, from every direction, each reflection quieter and duller than the last. Within a fraction of a second there are too many arrivals to count, and your ear stops resolving them individually. That dense wash is reverberation, and its character is how you know a cathedral from a car.
A reverb processor manufactures that wash. It does not need to simulate a real room to be useful, and most of the ones you will reach for do not — a plate reverb models a sheet of suspended metal, which is not a room at all, and it has been the standard vocal reverb for fifty years because it is dense and smooth and gets out of the way.
The Controls Worth Understanding
Decay time is how long the wash takes to fade away. Short decays, under a second, read as a small room and stay out of the way. Long decays, three seconds and up, read as a large hall and start becoming an audible effect in their own right. The most common beginner mistake is reaching for decay when the real problem is level.
Pre-delay is the gap between the dry sound and the moment the reverb starts. It is the single most useful control on the plugin and the one most often left alone. In a real space, the direct sound reaches you before any reflection does, because the direct path is the shortest one. Reproducing that gap — anywhere from 20 to 80 milliseconds — keeps the front of each word clear and dry while the tail goes wet. Without pre-delay, the reverb starts on top of the consonant, and the vocal turns to mush at exactly the moment intelligibility depends on it.
Size changes the character of the early reflections rather than the length of the tail. Two reverbs with identical decay times but different size settings will sound like different rooms.
Damping, sometimes labelled HF decay, controls how much faster high frequencies die away than low ones. In a real room they always do — air absorbs treble, and soft surfaces absorb it faster still. A reverb with no damping sounds glassy and artificial because it is doing something no physical space does.
Mix, or wet/dry, is how much of the processed signal you hear. On a send it should usually be 100% wet, for reasons below.
Delay: The Same Trick, Slower
A delay stores the signal and plays it back later. Delay time sets how much later, feedback sets how many times the repeat feeds back into itself before dying out, and mix sets its level.
Delay times of 30 to 120 milliseconds land as slapback — a single quick doubling that thickens a vocal without ever being heard as an echo. Longer times become musical repeats, and this is where matching the tempo matters: a delay set to a quarter note reinforces the pulse, while a dotted eighth creates the cross-rhythm that has been a stadium guitar signature since the early eighties. Most plugins will sync to the session tempo for you. If you are working to a click or a grid, use it.
The practical advantage of delay over reverb is that it fills space without filling time. A repeat that lands in the gap between phrases makes a track sound larger while leaving the phrases themselves untouched, which is why a busy mix that has run out of room for more reverb can often take more delay.
Sends, Not Inserts
Put reverb on a send rather than an insert, and put it on one send that several channels share.
An insert processes one channel and only that channel, which means five channels wanting reverb get five separate reverbs — five different manufactured spaces, competing, using five times the CPU, adjusted five times whenever you change your mind. A send takes a copy of each channel, feeds them all into one reverb set to 100% wet, and returns the result on its own fader. Now every instrument sits in the same space, which is what makes a mix sound like a performance rather than a stack of unrelated recordings, and the amount of any given instrument in that space is one send knob.
Why the Room Changes the Answer Live
Everything above assumes you are adding a space. On stage you already have one, for free, whether you want it or not — and it is usually a bad one. A low-ceilinged bar with hard walls is already smearing every note with reflections, and adding reverb to the vocal on top of that is adding mud to mud.
The rule live is roughly the inverse of the studio: the bigger and more reverberant the room, the less reverb you should add. A dry, carpeted, heavily-treated room may want a touch on the vocal to stop it sounding stark. A tiled room with a concrete floor wants none at all, and the vocal will still sound wetter than the one you rehearsed. If the audience cannot make out the words, reverb is the first thing to turn down, before EQ and before level.
What This Means for You
- Reach for pre-delay before decay time. Most "too much reverb" is really "reverb starting too early" — 20 to 80 ms of pre-delay fixes intelligibility without shortening the tail you liked.
- Set the level with the fader down, then bring it up until you notice it, then back off. Reverb you can consciously hear in a full mix is usually 3 to 6 dB too loud.
- One reverb on a send, shared by several channels. Separate reverbs per channel is the fastest route to a mix that sounds assembled rather than performed.
- Use delay when the mix is already crowded. It adds size in the gaps instead of across everything.
- Sync delay to the tempo unless you deliberately want it fighting the groove. Quarter note to reinforce, dotted eighth for movement.
- Turn damping up until the tail stops sounding like glass. No real space has an undamped top end.
- Live, subtract instead of adding. The room is already the reverb; your job is usually to fight it, not to feed it.
