Gain Staging: Why Your Signal Clips

Gain staging is the practice of setting the volume at every stage of your signal path so that each piece of gear gets a healthy, usable level — not too quiet, not too loud. Do it right and every fader, EQ, and effect you touch afterward behaves the way you expect. Skip it and you're fighting noise, distortion, or both, no matter how good your gear is or how carefully you dial in a mix later.

Musicians tend to think of "the sound" as one thing you adjust with one knob. It isn't. Your signal passes through several stages before anyone hears it, and each stage has its own gain control. Getting the levels right at each step, in order, is gain staging. Getting it wrong at the first step means every step after it is trying to fix a problem it can't actually fix.

What Gain Staging Is

Every piece of audio gear — an amp, a mixer channel, an interface, a DAW track — has a range it works best in. Too little signal and you're amplifying hiss along with your instrument. Too much and you're clipping: the signal exceeds what the gear can handle and the top and bottom of the waveform get chopped flat, which your ears hear as harsh, ugly distortion. Gain staging means finding the sweet spot at each stage rather than dumping the problem downstream and hoping a compressor or EQ fixes it later. It usually can't.

The Signal Chain, In Order

Your signal moves through a chain, and the order matters:

  • Source — the instrument or voice itself. A guitar with the volume knob rolled halfway down, or a singer standing too far from the mic, is already sending a compromised signal before anything else touches it.
  • Preamp gain — the first amplification stage, on a mixer, interface, or amp head. This sets the fundamental level of everything downstream. Get this wrong and nothing after it can fully correct it.
  • Channel fader — the mixer or DAW fader for that individual channel. This is where you balance one instrument against another, after the preamp gain is already set correctly.
  • Bus/master — the group and master outputs everything gets summed into before it leaves the system. If individual channels are set well, the master fader is mostly just a final volume control, not a rescue operation.

Each stage should hand a clean, appropriately sized signal to the next one. A weak source can't be fixed by cranking the preamp — you'll just amplify the noise floor along with the instrument. A hot preamp can't be fixed by pulling the fader down — the distortion already happened before the fader saw the signal.

Unity Gain and Why You Set Gain First

Unity gain is the reference point where a fader or control neither boosts nor cuts the signal — what goes in matches what comes out. Setting your preamp gain so a fader can sit near unity gives you room to move that fader up or down in a mix without running out of headroom in either direction. That's why gain always gets set before you touch the mix: it establishes a stable, predictable starting point that every later decision depends on. If you set your levels with faders instead of gain, you end up with some channels maxed out and others buried, and no room left to react when a song gets louder.

Clipping: What It Sounds Like and Where It Hides

Clipping sounds like a harsh, buzzy edge on loud notes — a snare that cracks unpleasantly, a vocal that spits on louder phrases, a guitar that sounds distorted even when the amp itself is clean. It's easy to mistake for "the room is loud" or "that mic is bad" when the real cause is a gain stage set too hot.

The tricky part is that clipping can happen at any single stage in the chain, and a meter reading fine somewhere else in the signal path won't tell you about it. A preamp can clip before the signal ever reaches a fader that looks perfectly reasonable. A DI box can clip before it hits the mixer. Whenever something sounds distorted and you didn't ask for distortion, work backward through the chain one stage at a time rather than guessing.

A Practical Soundcheck and Tracking Checklist

  • Start every gain control at zero or unity, not wherever it was left from last time.
  • Set the source first — instrument volume, mic placement, vocal distance — before touching any gain knob.
  • Bring up preamp gain while playing at real performance volume, not a quiet test tap.
  • Watch for the loudest moment of the song, not the average moment — that's what will clip.
  • Leave headroom: aim for peaks a few dB below where clipping starts, not right at the edge.
  • Set faders last, once every channel's gain is already sitting at a sensible level.
  • Recheck after soundcheck once the room fills with bodies — a packed room absorbs sound differently than an empty one.
