Live Sound: PA, Monitors and Surviving Soundcheck

Soundcheck goes badly for most working bands not because the engineer is bad or the room is difficult, but because nobody on stage knows what they're actually asking for. A few habits — understanding who controls what, keeping your stage volume reasonable, and asking for monitor changes in language an engineer can act on — turn soundcheck from a stressful scramble into a quick, boring formality. Boring is the goal.

What the House Engineer Controls vs What You Control

The house engineer controls the front-of-house mix — what the audience hears — and usually the monitor mixes too, built from the same signals coming off the stage. What they do not control is what actually reaches those microphones and DI boxes in the first place: your amp volume, your guitar's output level, how close a singer stands to the mic, how hard a drummer hits. If your stage volume is too loud or your instrument's own tone is harsh, no amount of skill at the console can fully undo that before it reaches the audience — the engineer is mixing what you give them, not creating the tone from nothing. Understanding that split is the difference between blaming "the sound guy" for a bad night and recognizing what was actually a stage-volume or tone problem you had control over the whole time.

Stage Volume: Why Lower Amps Mix Better

A guitar amp cranked up on stage doesn't just get louder in the room — it bleeds into every microphone nearby, including the vocal mics and other instrument mics, and that bleed is impossible to separate out afterward. A quieter stage means the engineer's microphones are picking up mostly what they're supposed to be picking up, which gives them far more control to build a balanced mix and keep the vocals audible over everything else. It also means the monitors don't have to fight as hard against the stage noise to be heard, so everyone's monitor mix ends up cleaner too. A band that keeps its stage volume reasonable is doing more to guarantee a good mix than almost any other single decision available to them.

Asking for a Monitor Mix That Actually Works

"Can you make my monitor sound better" tells an engineer nothing they can act on. What actually gets a fast, correct response is relative and specific: "more vocal, less guitar," "a little less of me, more of the kick and bass," "cut the reverb, I can't hear my pitch." Naming what you want more of and what you want less of gives the engineer two clear moves instead of a vague target they have to guess at. It also helps to know your own monitor needs before you're standing on stage trying to shout them over a soundcheck — a singer usually needs to hear their own voice clearly above the band to stay in tune, while a drummer might mainly need the bass and a click if there is one.

Line Check vs Soundcheck

A line check is quick and mechanical: the engineer confirms every microphone and DI is working, plugged into the right channel, and producing signal — nothing more. A full soundcheck is where the actual mix gets built: levels get balanced against each other, monitors get dialed in, and the room itself gets addressed. On a tight schedule with several bands on a bill, you may only get a line check before doors, with the real mix happening on the fly during your first couple of songs. Knowing which one you're getting changes what to expect — don't panic if a line check doesn't sound like a finished mix, because it isn't meant to.

Practical Stagecraft: DIs, Cables and Feedback

A DI box converts an instrument's signal into a format that travels cleanly over a long mic cable to the console without picking up noise — useful for keyboards, acoustic-electric guitars, and bass. Bringing your own cables and knowing your gear's outputs means less time spent troubleshooting someone else's borrowed cable that turns out to be the problem, and it's one less unknown in a signal chain during a short changeover.

Feedback is the howl or ring that happens when a microphone picks up sound from a speaker and re-amplifies it in a loop that builds on itself. It usually starts as a specific frequency ringing before it becomes a full howl, and it gets worse the closer a mic is to a monitor speaker or the louder that monitor is pushed. If you hear a monitor starting to ring at a specific pitch, that's an early warning — stepping back from the speaker or asking the engineer to pull that monitor down slightly can stop it before it becomes the piercing squeal everyone in the room remembers for the wrong reasons.
