Dynamic vs Condenser Microphones

This is the first real decision in every microphone purchase, and it is genuinely a fork: the two designs convert sound to signal by different physics, and the physics decides where each belongs. A dynamic generates its own signal from a coil moving in a magnet — rugged, unpowered, comparatively deaf to the quiet and the distant. A condenser reads the motion of a charged diaphragm and needs electronics and phantom power to do it — sensitive, detailed, and faithful to everything, including everything you wish it ignored.

Short answer: loud and close favours dynamic; quiet and detailed favours condenser; and an untreated room favours dynamic even for jobs condensers normally win. The rest is why, and where the fashionable answers go wrong.

The Physics, in One Paragraph Each

A dynamic is a loudspeaker run backwards: diaphragm, coil, magnet, signal. The moving mass is comparatively heavy, so the very fastest transients and the airiest top end are smoothed away — and the same mass makes the design nearly impossible to overload and utterly indifferent to abuse. No power, no electronics to hiss, low output that asks real gain of a preamp, exactly as the gain-staging lesson describes.

A condenser suspends a feather-light charged diaphragm a hair from a backplate and measures the varying capacitance — a mechanism so slight it follows detail the dynamic's coil never feels. The price: internal electronics, 48-volt phantom power from the desk, more fragility, and sensitivity that does not discriminate — the room, the fridge, the street all arrive with the voice. The Questions People Actually Search

  • For live vocals? Dynamic, almost always — the SM58 review is effectively this answer at length. Stage volume and monitor feedback punish condenser sensitivity, as the feedback lesson explains; handheld stage condensers exist and are lovely on quiet stages, but the default is the default for reasons.
  • For recording vocals? The studio tradition says large-diaphragm condenser, and in a treated room it is the right tradition. The Honest Recommendation

Buy for the room and the source you actually have, not the studio you have seen in photographs. A gigging vocalist needs a dynamic. A home recordist in an ordinary room gets further with a good dynamic and a reflection filter than with a budget condenser faithfully documenting the drywall. A treated space earns the condenser and repays it immediately. And nobody serious owns only one type — the working split is a couple of dynamics for the loud jobs and a condenser (or a pair) for the detailed ones, which is why the field-manual's starter-locker advice reads the way it does.
