Active vs Passive DI Boxes
The DI decision has the rare luxury of a nearly sufficient one-line rule: if the source has electronics pushing it, use a passive DI; if it doesn't, use an active one. Active bass into passive box, passive bass into active box — the polarity of the rule trips people up precisely because it is a mirror. This page is the rule, the reasons, and the edge cases where it bends.
What a DI does at all — balancing the signal and fixing the impedance so an instrument can survive the run to the desk — is the cables lesson's territory. Here we assume the whether and settle the which.
Why the Rule Works
A passive DI is a transformer: the signal crosses a magnetic core, gets balanced and stepped down, and no power is involved anywhere. Transformers are happiest when something with a bit of drive is pushing them — an active bass's preamp, a keyboard's output stage, a laptop interface. Give them that and they are silent, indestructible and immune to dead batteries; the Radial JDI review covers what separates a great transformer from a cheap one (headroom on loud low-frequency sources, mostly). Hand a passive DI a source with no drive — a vintage passive bass, above all an under-saddle piezo — and the transformer's comparatively low input impedance loads the pickup down: thin, quacky, and no EQ recovers what the loading removed.
An active DI is a powered buffer (phantom power from the desk, or a battery) in front of the balancing act. The buffer can present an enormous input impedance — the megohm-and-up that passive pickups and piezos need to sound like themselves — and can add gain to weak sources. The bills: it needs power, so a dead battery or a desk without phantom is a silent DI; and a very hot source can overload the buffer that a transformer would have absorbed with a shrug, which is what pad switches are for.
The Edge Cases
- Piezo pickups are the rule at its most extreme: they want megohms, and even some active DIs fall short of ideal. An acoustic player gigging on an under-saddle pickup should treat a high-impedance active DI (or a dedicated acoustic preamp) as part of the instrument.
- Ground loops favour passive: a transformer galvanically isolates the two sides, breaking hum loops by construction — the JDI review's quiet superpower. Connecting two powered systems (backline and desk, laptop rig and broadcast truck), the passive box is the peacekeeping tool even when the rule alone wouldn't demand it.
- Keyboards and laptops are active sources and follow the rule (passive box), with one wrinkle: stereo sources want a stereo or dual DI, not one channel of a pair summed by hope.
- Amp DI outputs on bass amps and modellers make the box unnecessary — that is a line-level balanced feed, already DI'd. The connectors chapter of this manual covers recognising it.
- Speaker-level DI — boxes rated to accept an amplifier's speaker output for cab-tone capture — are a specialised species; never feed speaker level into an ordinary DI of either kind.
The Honest Recommendation
A working band's bag holds one of each, which dissolves the decision into a habit: sources with electronics into the passive, sources without into the active, and the passive additionally on call for any hum emergency between two powered systems. Buying only one? A quality active DI covers more sources acceptably than a cheap passive covers well — the passive's advantages only fully arrive with a good transformer, which is where the money goes. And if the venue hands you a mystery DI, the field-manual rule applies: read what it is before trusting what it does.
Worth Knowing on the Way Out
- Electronics behind the source → passive; none → active — the mirror-image rule that settles ninety per cent of cases.
- Piezos are the extreme case — megohm-hungry, and the reason acoustic players carry their own box.
- Passive's transformer breaks ground loops by construction — the isolation trick no buffer can copy.
- Active dies without power — battery discipline and phantom awareness are part of the choice.
- One of each ends the debate — the two boxes together cost less than one soundcheck argument.
