Rhythm, Meter and Time Signatures

Every piece of music runs on a few layers of time stacked together. There is a pulse you could tap on your leg, a grouping that turns those taps into bars, and a subdivision that fills the gaps between them. Rhythm is the pattern you actually play across those layers — meter is the frame it gets played against. Most arguments a band has about a part being "wrong" turn out to be arguments about which layer each person is hearing.

What musicians most often get wrong is treating odd time as a maths problem they never learned. A guitarist who insists they cannot count 7/4 will happily play a funk figure that accents the "and" of two, skips the downbeat and ties across the barline — which is harder, and which they picked up by feel in an afternoon. Odd meters are unfamiliar groupings, not advanced arithmetic. The other frequent mistake is treating tempo and meter as one dial when they do entirely different jobs.

Three Layers of Time, and Only One of Them Is Speed

The beat is the pulse. Tempo is how fast that pulse repeats, counted in beats per minute, and it is only a rate — nothing about it tells you how the beats are organised. Tempo converts to real time with one division: 60,000 divided by the BPM gives the length of a quarter note in milliseconds, which is what BPM counts unless a compound meter says otherwise. At 120 BPM a quarter note (a crotchet, if you learned the British names) lasts 500 ms, and at 90 BPM it lasts about 667 ms. That is the same number you dial into a delay pedal to put the repeats on the beat.

Subdivision is the layer underneath. Halve the beat for eighth notes, halve again for sixteenths — at 120 BPM that gives 250 ms and 125 ms, while a dotted eighth, being one and a half eighths, comes to 375 ms. This is where delay charts get misread: an eighth-note delay at 120 BPM is 250 ms, not 500. A figure in milliseconds means nothing at all until you say which note value it refers to.

Meter is the third layer, and it is a grouping rather than a rate. It answers how many beats pass before the pattern starts over and which of them carry weight. Play a waltz faster and it is still a waltz — move the accent so every second beat feels like a landing and it stops being one, at any speed.

The Bottom Number Is Not the Beat

A time signature is two numbers doing two unrelated jobs. The top one says how many counts fit in a bar. The bottom one says which note value is being called a count: 4 means a quarter note, 8 means an eighth note, 2 means a half note. What the bottom number never tells you is duration — nothing in "4/4" says how fast anything moves. Note values are relative to each other, and tempo is what supplies the seconds.

In simple meters the beat divides in two, and there the bottom number does match the beat you feel. Count 4/4 aloud as "one-and-two-and-three-and-four-and" and every numbered beat is a quarter note with two eighths inside it — the "and" is the half-beat you are already saying. 3/4 and 2/4 behave identically with fewer beats in the bar.

Compound meters are where the bottom number stops describing anything you feel, and 6/8 is the case that confuses players for years. The bar holds six eighth notes, but nobody counts six: you feel two beats with three parts inside each, so the beat is a dotted quarter and the bottom number is naming the division instead. Count it "ONE-two-three-four-five-six" with four clearly lighter than one and the lilt appears. That weighting is exactly why 6/8 is not two bars of 3/8 — two bars would hand you two equal downbeats trudging in a row, where 6/8 gives one strong pulse, one secondary, and a long-short sway across a single bar. Irish double jigs are 6/8 and slip jigs are 9/8; slow blues and doo-wop ballads mostly sit in 12/8, four beats of three.

Syncopation Is Most of What You Call Groove

Syncopation is putting weight where the grid does not expect it, and it does most of the work in any music that feels like it moves. The plainest case is the backbeat holding up nearly all rock, pop and soul: the pulse counts one-two-three-four, and the snare deliberately lands on two and four — the beats meant to be weak. An audience clapping along claps there too, which tells you how completely that displacement has become the reference.

Finer syncopation moves accents off the beats altogether. A note lands on an "and", or it arrives early as an anticipation, where a chord hits on the last eighth of the bar and holds through the downbeat that was supposed to carry it. Funk, reggae, ska, ragtime and most Latin music are built from these placements rather than from unusual meters — the parts sound complicated because of where the notes sit, not how many there are.

The catch is that syncopation only exists relative to something steady. It reads as displacement because the listener is still counting the straight version underneath — and if nothing in the arrangement holds that reference, the part stops sounding clever and starts sounding lost. That is why a syncopated figure collapses the moment the drummer stops marking the pulse, and why practising one against a click is not optional.

Swing Is a Dial, Not a Switch

Straight eighth notes divide the beat evenly. Swing lengthens the first of each pair and shortens the second, and the figure everyone quotes is 2:1 — the long note twice the short, as though the pair were the outer two notes of a triplet. At 120 BPM one beat runs 500 ms, so straight eighths are 250 and 250, a strict 2:1 pair is 333 and 167, and a hard shuffle at 3:1 is 375 and 125, which on paper is nothing more exotic than a dotted eighth followed by a sixteenth.

Treating 2:1 as the definition is where it goes wrong, because measured swing is a continuum and 2:1 is one point on it. Studies of jazz drummers' ride-cymbal timing found ratios running from roughly 1:1 at fast tempos up to nearly 3.5:1 at slow ones, with neither the players nor the listeners settling on the textbook value. The short note also tends to hold near 100 ms across medium and fast tempos instead of scaling with the beat. At 200 BPM the beat is 300 ms, so a 100 ms short note leaves a ratio near 2:1 — but at 250 BPM the beat is 240 ms, and the same short note gives about 1.4:1, very nearly straight.

Which is why swing on a drum machine or in a DAW is a percentage rather than a checkbox — a setting that grooves under a slow shuffle turns mechanical the moment you double the tempo. Set it by ear, at the tempo you are actually playing.

Odd Meters Are Groupings You Can Say Out Loud

Five, seven and nine only look like arithmetic on the page. In performance they are short groups played back to back, and you count the groups. "Take Five" is 5/4 and it is not counted one-two-three-four-five — it is a three and a two, "ONE-two-three-ONE-two," with weight arriving twice a bar in unequal steps. Say the grouping aloud a few times and your hands find it before your head does.

Seven behaves the same way, split 4+3 or 3+4 depending on where the accents fall. Pink Floyd's "Money" spends most of its length in 7/4 and hands over to 4/4 for the guitar solo, which is worth noticing because nothing about the song gets harder at the changeover — a different number of beats arrives per bar, and that is the whole of it. Bigger numbers are still just groups: "Blue Rondo à la Turk" runs its 9/8 as three bars of 2+2+2+3 followed by one of 3+3+3, a Turkish aksak pattern rather than a puzzle.

Polyrhythm is the same idea stacked instead of strung out, and three-against-two is the one worth genuinely owning. Two pulses share one span of time, one dividing it in three and the other in two, so they agree at the start and nowhere else until the span comes round again. The reliable way in is words rather than counting: say "not dif-fi-cult" on a loop, with "not" landing in both hands, "dif" and "cult" belonging to the three, and "fi" belonging to the two. That relationship is the generating pattern behind a great deal of West African music and much of what carried from there into jazz and Latin rhythm.

What to Do With This at Rehearsal

  • Name the subdivision before quoting a delay time — 60,000 divided by the BPM gives a quarter note, an eighth is half that, and a dotted eighth is one and a half times it.
  • Count compound meters in beats, not eighth notes — two for 6/8 and four for 12/8, because counting all six or all twelve flattens a lilt into a march.
  • Say odd meters as groups instead of numbers — "ONE-two-three-ONE-two" survives a loud stage in a way that counting to five never does.
  • Get the pulse marked before anyone syncopates against it — displacement needs something audible to be displaced from.
  • Set swing by ear at your actual tempo — the amount that grooves on a slow shuffle stiffens up when you double the speed.
  • Practise three-against-two with words before hands — "not dif-fi-cult" lines the two layers up without any counting at all.
  • Check whether a hard part is really in odd time — most parts that feel uncountable are 4/4 with the accents moved, which is a listening problem rather than a maths one.
