Melody: The Line People Actually Remember
This track has given you notes, intervals, chords, keys and meter. None of that is what anyone hums walking out of a venue. They hum the melody, and melody is the part of theory that gets taught least, because it is the part with the fewest rules.
That is not the same as having no structure. Melodies that stay in people's heads share a small number of properties, and none of them is inspiration. This lesson is about those properties: what a melody is made of, how it sits against the chords underneath it, and why the ones that last are usually simpler than the ones beginners write.
Shape Comes Before Pitch
Ask someone to reproduce a tune they half-know and watch what survives. Not the intervals — they will get several of those wrong. What survives is the contour: it goes up here, it comes back down there, it sits still for a while and then jumps.
Contour is the coarse outline of a melody, and it is what memory stores first. A few shapes account for an enormous amount of music. The arch rises to a high point and returns, which is why so many choruses feel resolved by their own ending. The descending line starts high and falls, which is the easiest shape to sing and the reason so many hooks open on their highest note. The ascending line withholds its top note until the end, which makes the arrival the event. A melody that mostly stays put, with one departure, makes that single departure carry the whole phrase.
The practical use of this is diagnostic. If a melody you have written is not sticking, draw its contour — literally, as a line on paper — before touching the notes. A shape that wanders up and down without a clear high point is a shape with nothing to remember, and no amount of adjusting individual notes will fix a contour problem.
Range, and Where the Line Actually Lives
Two different numbers matter and they get conflated. Range is the distance from the lowest note to the highest. Tessitura is where the melody spends most of its time. A melody can have a wide range and a comfortable tessitura, and that combination is what a singer means when they say a song sits well.
The constraint is physical. A melody that lives near the top of a singer's range is exhausting to perform and will be sung flat by the third chorus; one that lives at the very bottom disappears the moment a band plays behind it. Most melodies that people can actually sing back cover somewhere around an octave, and the ones that go further tend to do it once, deliberately, at the moment the song is about.
This is also where the strongest argument for restraint comes from. A leap only registers as a leap if the surrounding material is mostly stepwise. Write a melody made entirely of large intervals and none of them is an event — you have spent the currency before there was anything to buy. The intervals lesson gives you the vocabulary; the discipline is using it sparingly.
A Motif Is a Small Cell You Do Things To
Very few melodies are long streams of new material. Most are a short idea — three notes, five notes, one bar — subjected to a handful of operations, and this is the single most transferable technique in the lesson.
Repeat it exactly. Straight repetition is not a failure of imagination; it is how a listener learns the idea well enough for a variation to mean anything.
Repeat it at a different pitch. Moving the same shape up or down is a sequence, and it is everywhere, because the ear recognises the shape as familiar while hearing the pitches as new. Two or three steps of a sequence is usually the limit before it starts to sound mechanical.
Change its ending. Same opening, different destination, which is how a second phrase answers a first.
Stretch or compress it. The same pitches at half or double the note values is recognisably the same idea wearing different clothes.
Turn it upside down. Every interval that went up now goes down. This is more common in instrumental writing than in songs, but it is a real option when a section needs to be related to another without repeating it.
What makes all of this work is memory rather than cleverness. A listener hearing a piece of music for the first time is trying to find something to hold onto, and repetition of a small unit is what gives them one. Songs that fail to stick very often fail because they never repeat anything long enough for it to be learned.
The Melody and the Chords Are One Decision
Here is the part that separates a melody that works from a sequence of notes that happens to be in the right key. Every note in a melody is either in the chord underneath it or not, and the difference is what produces motion.
A note that belongs to the current chord sounds settled. A note that does not sounds like it is on the way somewhere, and the ear expects it to arrive. Neither is better; a melody made only of chord tones is inert, and one that avoids them entirely never lands.
What matters at least as much as which notes you use is where you put them. The note sitting on a strong beat, at the moment the chord changes, is the note that defines what the harmony sounds like. Put the third of the chord there and the chord's quality is unmistakable. Put a non-chord tone there and hold it, and you have written a suspension — a note that belongs to the previous chord, held over the new one, resolving a step downwards afterwards. That gesture is one of the oldest in Western music and it still works.
The standard ways of leaving and returning to chord tones are worth knowing by name, because naming them makes them usable rather than accidental:
- A passing tone fills the gap between two chord tones a third apart, on a weak beat, moving in one direction.
- A neighbour tone steps away from a chord tone and straight back to it.
- A suspension holds a note from the previous chord into the new one and then steps down.
- An appoggiatura arrives on a strong beat as a non-chord tone, unprepared, and steps to a chord tone afterwards. It is the most emotionally loaded of the four for exactly that reason: it puts the unstable note in the most prominent position available.
The chords lesson explains where a key's chords come from. This is what you do on top of them, and the two are not separable tasks. A melody written in isolation and a progression written in isolation will meet as strangers.
Rhythm Is Half the Melody
Play the pitches of a well-known tune with every note the same length and it becomes hard to identify. Tap only its rhythm, with no pitches at all, and people often name it. That asymmetry should tell you where the identity lives.
A melody's rhythmic profile is a real compositional choice and usually an underused one. Where the phrase starts relative to the bar is the first decision: a melody beginning on beat one is stable and slightly foursquare, while one beginning before the bar — a pickup — arrives with momentum already underway. Most memorable vocal melodies start before the beat, and it is not a coincidence.
The second decision is where the silences go. A melody with no gaps has no shape and nowhere for a singer to breathe, which is a practical problem as well as a musical one. The rhythm lesson deals with subdivision and meter as their own subject; what matters here is that a melody's gaps are as composed as its notes.
Phrases Ask and Answer
Melodies group into phrases, and phrases pair. The first states something and stops somewhere unsettled; the second restates it and finishes somewhere stable. Four bars and four bars is the commonest arrangement in popular music, to the point where the ear predicts it and notices when it does not happen.
Which is the useful part. Because the pairing is expected, breaking it is a device: a phrase that runs to five bars, or a chorus that arrives two beats early, is audibly a decision. That only reads as a decision if the rest of the song has established the pattern being departed from — and how those phrases assemble into verses, choruses and bridges is the form lesson's territory.
What This Means for You
- Draw the contour before you fix the notes. A melody with no clear high point has nothing for a listener to hold onto, and rewriting individual pitches will not create one.
- Keep the tessitura comfortable and spend the range once. A singer lives in the middle of the melody, not at its extremes.
- Move mostly by step so that a leap means something. All leaps is the same as no leaps.
- Build from one short cell and transform it. Repeat it, sequence it, change its ending, stretch it — repetition is how a listener learns the idea.
- Decide what lands on the downbeat. The note on the strong beat is the note that tells the ear what the chord is.
- Write the melody and the harmony together. The interesting notes are the ones that are not in the chord, which means you have to know the chord.
- Compose the rhythm and the rests deliberately. People recognise tunes from rhythm alone, and singers need somewhere to breathe.
- Start before the bar more often than you think. A pickup gives a phrase momentum that a downbeat entry has to work for.
- Sing what you write, out loud. Every problem in this lesson — range, tessitura, phrase length, where the breaths are — announces itself immediately and cannot be seen on paper. If you cannot get through it, neither can the person you wrote it for, and the ear-training lesson is the skill that makes this diagnosis fast.
