Stands, Clips and Stage Hardware

Nobody rehearses stands. They are the part of the rig with no signal in it, so they get bought last, replaced never, and blamed only when a boom arm sags into a snare drum mid-song or a speaker pole lets a cabinet wander. But the hardware between the floor and the equipment decides more of the night than it gets credit for: whether the mic stays where the soundcheck put it, whether a cable run survives an audience, whether anything falls.

This chapter is the inventory of that unglamorous layer — what each piece is called, what it is actually for, and the small number of mechanical facts (two thread sizes, one pole diameter, the difference between the tapes) that save real time when gear from three owners meets on one stage.

Microphone Stands

  • Tripod boom — the general-purpose stand: folding three-leg base, telescoping upright, boom arm on a clutch. Covers vocals, guitar amps and most of a drum kit. Its weakness is the geometry — a fully extended boom over a leg is stable, over the gap between legs it is a lever waiting for a nudge.
  • Round-base straight — a weighted cast base and a plain upright. The vocal-mic classic: smaller footprint on a crowded stage, no boom to walk into, heavy enough to survive a singer leaning on it. The weight that makes it stable makes it the one nobody wants to carry.
  • Short and low-profile stands — the same designs at knee height, for kick drums, guitar cabinets and floor wedges. Worth owning outright, because improvising one from a full-size stand at full boom extension is how mics end up inside kick drums.
  • Overhead and heavy studio booms — counterweighted arms on wide, often wheeled bases, for placing a mic high over a drum kit or choir. The counterweight is not decoration: an uncounterweighted heavy boom at height is a slow-motion accident.

Two mechanical facts cover most stand friction. First, threads: the microphone world runs on two sizes — 5/8-inch (the North American standard on clips and stand tops) and 3/8-inch (the European standard) — and the little knurled adapter between them is the most-lost object in live sound; buy several, and leave one wound into every clip you own. Second, clutches wear: a stand that slips under a mic's weight is not "a bit loose", it is finished, because it will finish its slide during the quietest song.

Clips, Mounts and the Things That Hold the Mic

  • Standard mic clips — sized to the mic body, and not universal: a hand-held dynamic's clip will not grip a slim pencil condenser, and forcing it is how mics meet floors. Every mic should live with its own clip.
  • Shock mounts — the elastic cradles that decouple a sensitive condenser from the stand, so footsteps and stand knocks don't arrive as low-frequency thumps. On a quiet studio source they are the difference between usable and not; on a loud stage they mostly signal that the wrong mic came out of the case.
  • Drum claws and rim mounts — clamps that put a mic on the drum itself instead of a stand, trading some isolation for a floor with fewer legs on it. On a small stage, every stand a claw eliminates is a stand nobody kicks.
  • Goosenecks and thread couplers — flexible extensions and joiners for awkward angles. A gooseneck holds a position; it does not hold a heavy mic at full horizontal reach, and it will remind you nightly if asked to.

Speaker Hardware

  • Speaker poles and top-hats — the pole is a standard 35 mm diameter, and the socket in a cabinet's base is the "top-hat". Pole-mounting gets the high-frequency horn up over the audience's heads, which the loudspeakers lesson explains matters because high frequencies travel as a beam. A pole between a subwoofer and a top box is the classic small-PA package.
  • Tripod speaker stands — the same idea with legs, for tops without a sub beneath them. Their enemy is enthusiasm: a heavy powered box at full mast on spread-too-narrow legs is top-heavy, and the fix is boring — legs fully spread, height no more than needed, and something soft-heavy (a sandbag, not a drink) over a leg outdoors.
  • Flying hardware — the rated eyebolts, brackets and bridles that hang cabinets from rigging points. This is the one category in this chapter with a hard line through it: flying anything over people is certified-hardware, competent-person territory, and improvising it is not a corner, it is a cliff.

Cables Underfoot, and the Tapes

A cable run across a walkway is a hazard and an unreliability at once, and the fixes are hierarchical: reroute it if you can, ramp it if people must cross it, tape it if nothing else is possible. Which brings up the tapes, because they are not interchangeable. Gaffer tape is cloth, tears clean by hand, holds a cable to a stage all night and comes up without leaving the stage's finish behind. Duct tape is plastic, stretches instead of tearing, and leaves adhesive on everything it touches — venues remember who used it. The third tape worth carrying is electrical tape, not for cables underfoot but for marking: gain positions, cable IDs, and the DI that belongs to the bass player and not the venue.

While you are down there: dress cable runs along walls and stand legs, cross mains and signal at right angles rather than running them side by side for metres, and leave service loops at both ends — a cable taped drum-tight is a cable that transmits every kick straight up the stand. And the stage itself is hardware too: a wobbly riser under a drum kit, or a wedge the monitors lesson would tell you is aimed at nobody, are stand-and-floor problems before they are sound problems.

What to Check Before the Next Load-In

  • Booms over legs, not over gaps — rotate the base, not just the arm, so extended booms sit above a supporting leg.
  • Carry thread adapters like guitarists carry picks — 5/8 to 3/8 and back; one in every clip, spares in the bag.
  • Retire slipping clutches immediately — a stand that creeps under load has already failed, just slowly.
  • Match clip to mic before the stand goes up — forcing the wrong clip is a coin-flip with someone else's microphone.
  • Spread stand legs fully and keep masts modest — height you don't need is stability you gave away.
  • Gaffer, never duct — and ramp or reroute before either, anywhere the public walks.
  • Leave flying to rated hardware and the people trained on it — nothing else in this chapter can hurt someone from six metres up.
