Amplifiers, From Backline to Rack

"Amp" is one syllable doing three jobs. The rack amplifier driving the PA, the combo behind the guitarist and the powered module bolted inside a modern speaker are all amplifiers, but they are built to opposite priorities — one is paid to be inaudible as itself, one is paid to have a personality, and one is paid to be light. Confusing the categories is how a bass rig ends up driving a PA top, and how a spec sheet's biggest number gets mistaken for loudness.

This chapter sorts the boxes. The electrical theory — impedance, damping, why paralleling cabinets changes what the amplifier must survive — is the power lesson's territory and is only pointed at here. This is the field half: what each kind of amplifier is, what the panel controls actually do, and the two loading mistakes that genuinely destroy equipment.

Power Amplifiers: Paid to Be Invisible

A power amplifier has one job — take a line-level signal and make it big enough to move loudspeakers — and the professional rack amp is judged on doing that without adding anything of its own. The panel is deliberately boring: input sensitivity controls (attenuators, not "volume" — they set how much input produces full output), clip lights that must be respected, and on many amps a bridge-mono switch that combines both channels into one more powerful output. Bridging halves the minimum impedance the amp will tolerate, which is exactly the kind of arithmetic the power lesson exists for.

The ratings game matters here. "Watts" without conditions is advertising: a real rating names the load ("into 8 ohms", "into 4 ohms"), the distortion at which it was measured, and whether it is continuous or a burst figure. The specs lesson covers reading those claims; the field rule is shorter — compare amplifiers only where the stated conditions match, and treat any four-digit number with no ohms attached as a mood.

Amplifier Classes, in Field Terms

Class letters describe how the output stage handles current, and only three matter in the field. Class A runs its devices flat out all the time: simplest signal path, wildly inefficient, runs hot — boutique guitar amp territory. Class AB splits the work between devices that each rest half the cycle: the classic design behind decades of PA and hi-fi, efficient enough, heavy because of its power supply and heatsinks. Class D switches its devices fully on or off at ultrasonic speed and filters the result: efficiencies above 90 per cent, so little heat and little weight — which is why a two-kilowatt module now lives inside a 15-kilogram powered speaker instead of a flight case. Class D is not "digital" (the D is just the next letter), and at this point it is not the compromise either; it is simply how high power is built now.

Instrument Amplifiers: Paid to Have a Personality

An instrument amp inverts every priority above. Distortion is not a spec-sheet sin but the product; frequency response is deliberately shaped; the loudspeaker in the cabinet is voiced as part of the instrument. Guitar amps roll off where a guitar stops mattering, and a bass amp is a different machine, built for the low-frequency current a bass demands — which is why guitar into a bass amp is fine and merely dull, while bass into a small guitar combo at volume is a paid-for cone failure.

  • Combo — amp and speaker in one box. Convenient, self-contained, and the format of most of the amps on this site's stages.
  • Head and cabinet — the amp separated from its speakers, joined by a speaker cable, never an instrument cable — the connectors chapter of this manual explains why that swap fails, sometimes expensively.
  • Tube (valve) amps — the old technology that refused to die, because the way tubes overload is gradual and musical, and players steer that behaviour like an instrument. The costs: weight, heat, periodic tube replacement, and the two hard rules below.
  • Solid-state amps — transistor output stages: lighter, cheaper, consistent night to night, and clean far longer as you turn up. The Twin Reverb's review page covers why "clean headroom" is a personality of its own.
  • Modellers and profilers — digital boxes that simulate amp-and-cabinet chains and send the result straight to the desk. To front of house they are the easiest backline of all: a line-level balanced feed, no mic, no stage volume. The trade is that the monitors lesson starts mattering more, because nothing on stage is making the guitar's sound acoustically.

The panel, briefly: gain sets how hard the preamp is driven — past a point it is a distortion control, not a loudness control — and the master sets how much of the result reaches the output stage; the gain-staging lesson's logic applies inside the amp exactly as it does on a desk. Standby on a tube amp lets the tubes warm before high voltage hits them — up for a minute before playing, and use it (not the power switch) for set breaks. An effects loop is an insert between preamp and power amp, which is why time-based pedals sound cleaner there than in front of a driven input.

The Two Loading Mistakes That Kill Amplifiers

They are opposites, which is why people mix them up. A tube amplifier must always have a speaker (or a rated load) connected while it is on — its output transformer needs somewhere to send the energy, and with no load the energy finds the transformer's own insulation instead. A missing speaker cable, or an instrument cable that failed open, can end a tube amp in one loud song. A solid-state amplifier is the reverse: running with no load is harmless, but running below its minimum rated impedance — too many cabinets in parallel — demands more current than its output stage can supply, and it cooks. Tube amps also prefer their impedance selector matched to the cabinet, but their fatal case is no load; solid state's fatal case is too much load. The power lesson has the arithmetic; the field rule is to know which kind of amp you are holding before you change what hangs off it.

And one inheritance from the kit-bag chapter, because it cannot be said twice too often: the inside of a tube amp stores lethal voltage after power-off. Tube swaps from the outside, chassis to a technician.

What to Check Before the Next Load-In

  • Know which of the three families the box belongs to — PA amp, instrument amp, or powered-speaker module; their rules do not transfer.
  • Read power ratings only with their conditions attached — no ohms, no distortion figure, no meaning.
  • Head to cab on speaker cable only — and check the cabinet impedance against the amp before the first note, not after.
  • Tube amps: load always connected, standby for breaks, chassis never opened — three rules, zero exceptions.
  • Solid state: never below minimum impedance — count the cabinets before you parallel one more.
  • Treat gain as a tone control and master as the loudness — and set them in that order.
  • Respect the clip lights on the rack amp — they are the one part of the invisible amplifier that is telling you something.
