The Leslie 122: The Speaker That Is an Instrument

Every other loudspeaker in this guide is judged by how little it changes the signal. The Leslie is the exception that proves the rule by inverting it: a speaker cabinet whose entire purpose is to change the sound — by physically spinning it around the room — and which did the job so distinctively that it stopped being equipment and became an instrument. When you hear a Hammond organ swirl and bloom in a gospel, rock or soul record, you are hearing furniture rotate.

Donald Leslie built the first versions around 1940, after finding that his Hammond sounded grander in a big hall than in his living room and deciding to build the hall's movement into a box. Hammond the company famously rejected the idea, and organists famously didn't: the pairing of Hammond tonewheel organ and Leslie cabinet became one of music's great unofficial marriages, and the 122 — the model voiced and interfaced specifically for Hammond's console organs — is the canonical unit.

Doppler as a Design Material

Inside the tall wooden cabinet, a tube amplifier of about 40 watts splits the signal at an 800 Hz crossover into two rotating systems. The treble goes to a compression driver firing up into a spinning horn (one flare works; the twin opposite it is a counterweight), and the bass goes to a downward-firing woofer whose sound exits through a rotating drum-shaped scoop beneath it. As each rotor sweeps toward and away from the listener, the pitch rises and falls — the Doppler effect, the same physics the phase lesson's frequency material underpins — while the level and the tone swing with it, and the room's reflections are stirred continuously. The result is frequency modulation, amplitude modulation and a moving spatial image at once: a chorus effect avant la lettre, produced mechanically.

The two speeds are a performance vocabulary. Chorale, the slow setting, ambles at roughly 40 revolutions per minute and produces a gentle, churchy waver; tremolo, the fast setting, spins the rotors up toward several hundred RPM into the full swirl. The music happens between them: because the rotors take seconds to accelerate and coast down — the light horn faster, the heavy bass drum lagging behind — every speed change is a gesture, and organists ride the switch the way guitarists ride a wah pedal. No plugin ramp quite matches two mismatched flywheels obeying their own inertia, which is exactly what the emulations chase hardest.

Living With the Beast

The 122 is organ furniture, and everything practical about it says so. It is the size of a small dresser and correspondingly heavy — a two-person lift before the stairs are mentioned. It connects to a Hammond through a dedicated multi-pin cable that carries signal, power and the speed switching together (the 122 expects a balanced feed from the organ's amplifier, which is why plugging anything else into one is a project involving adapter kits rather than a cable). It is a tube amplifier in a box, so the amplifiers chapter's rules and the kit-bag chapter's never-open-the-chassis warning apply in full. And it must be mic'd, because 40 watts of 1940s amplification does not compete with a modern backline: the standard recipe is two mics on the top louvres for the horn — spaced to catch the stereo swirl — and one on the lower louvres for the bass rotor, placed far enough back that the rotor's wind noise stays out of the low mics. Close-miking a Leslie is a compromise by definition; the effect is the room, and the placement lesson's move-the-mic doctrine gets a workout every time.

Guitarists borrowed the cabinet almost immediately — from 1960s psychedelia onward — and the borrowing produced a whole family of descendants: the Fender Vibratone, a rotating-baffle speaker built for guitar, and ultimately every chorus and rotary pedal on every pedalboard, all of them portraits of this box. The modern organist's compromise is a rotary simulator into a normal PA; the reason the real cabinets still get trucked to gigs is that the simulators are good and the original is correct.

Worth Knowing on the Way Out
