The Shure SM7B: The Broadcast Mic That Went Everywhere
The SM7 was designed in 1973 for American radio announcers: a large-diaphragm dynamic on a yoke mount, meant to sit on a boom arm centimetres from a professional voice in a quiet studio. For its first few decades that is quietly what it did — with one enormous exception, when Bruce Swedien used one for Michael Jackson's vocals on Thriller, a fact that has sold more SM7s than any advertisement Shure ever ran.
Then the internet started talking into microphones, and the SM7B — the current version of the same design — became the default face of podcasting, streaming and home vocal recording almost overnight. The interesting part is that it succeeded in bedrooms for exactly the reasons it was designed for radio booths, and that the same reasons produce the one problem every new owner discovers the first night.
A Dynamic Doing a Condenser's Job
The obvious question is why anyone records studio vocals on a dynamic when condensers exist, and the SM7B is the whole answer in one product. Being a dynamic, it hears what is close and loud and is comparatively deaf to what is distant and quiet — which in a treated studio is a limitation, and in an untreated bedroom is the entire value. The computer fan, the street, the room's boxy reflections: all of it sits far enough down that the SM7B simply doesn't dignify it, where a condenser would deliver the room along with the voice. Add a genuinely effective internal pop and breath filter, a shock-mounted cartridge, and a smooth, presence-tamed voicing that flatters close speech (the switchable bass roll-off and presence boost on the back fine-tune it), and you have a microphone that makes an ordinary room sound like a decision rather than an accident.
It rewards being worked close — the proximity effect the microphones lesson describes is part of the intended sound — and it tolerates loud sources completely, which is why it moonlights convincingly on guitar cabs and even kick drums.
The Gain Problem
The SM7B's output is very low even by dynamic standards, and this is the famous catch. Speech at a normal distance can want something like 60 dB of clean gain, which is more than many budget interfaces deliver gracefully; wind such a preamp fully up and the noise floor arrives with it, exactly as the gain-staging lesson predicts. The standard remedies, in rising order of cost: get closer (free, and the mic likes it); an inline booster — the Cloudlifter is the famous one, a phantom-powered ~25 dB gain stage the mic industry practically built around this microphone; or an interface whose preamps have honest headroom. None of this is a defect, strictly — a broadcast console had gain for days — but it means the SM7B is a system purchase, and the reviews blaming a "quiet, hissy mic" are nearly always reviewing the preamp behind it.
The Right Buyer
For a spoken-word setup in an ordinary room, it is close to the safe answer, which is how it earned the podcast throne. For sung vocals it is a legitimate studio choice with a long discography, best on powerful voices worked close, less convincing where air and delicacy are the point — that remains condenser territory. For live vocals it appears occasionally on yoke-mounted lead singers as much for the look as the sound; the SM58 remains the practical stage tool. And for anyone whose interface offers modest gain, the honest arithmetic is mic plus booster, because half a solution is the one configuration that disappoints.
Worth Knowing on the Way Out
- It succeeds by ignoring the room — the dynamic's deafness to distance is the feature bedrooms are buying.
- Budget 60 dB of clean gain — closer, a Cloudlifter-style booster, or a better preamp; pick at least one.
- Work it close, on purpose — proximity effect and the internal filtering are the designed-in sound.
- The switches are on the back for a reason — flat for music, roll-off and presence for speech, set once per voice.
- It is not a condenser substitute — it is the mic for when a condenser would faithfully record everything you wish weren't there.
