Music funding in Yukon

Yukon is the best-served territory for musicians by a wide margin — and uniquely in the North, the territorial government runs a music-specific fund.

The Performing Musicians Fund

The Performing Musicians Fund, administered by the Media Development unit of Economic Development, is the territory's dedicated music money (it replaced the older Yukon Sound Recording Program). It has separate emerging and established tiers and covers skill refinement, professional recording for commercial release, showcase applications, and marketing of newly released music.

The Arts Section: four more doors

The Tourism and Culture department's Arts Section runs the discipline-agnostic side: an Arts Fund for groups only (societies, collectives, First Nations and municipal governments — individuals can't apply), an Advanced Artist Award for individual artists at mid-career and beyond (funded by Lotteries Yukon), a dedicated Touring Artist Fund for touring outside the territory, and a career advancement fund that makes two large fixed awards a year. A distinctive Yukon quirk: several of these run on the same quarterly rhythm — mid-March, mid-June, mid-September, mid-December.

Music Yukon: the guide, not the funder

Music Yukon is the territorial industry association and FACTOR's Regional Education Coordinator for Yukon — it helps artists apply for federal FACTOR money, runs workshops, and recruits jurors, but does not administer grants of its own.

Applying

Musicians start with the Performing Musicians Fund for recording and marketing, add the Touring Artist Fund when heading out of territory, and lean on Music Yukon to navigate FACTOR for everything the territory doesn't cover.
