Music funding in the Northwest Territories

NWT arts funding was completely restructured in spring 2026, and the defining trait of the new system is that it frames the arts as economic diversification, not culture.

One funder, a ladder of programs

The long-standing NWT Arts Council model is gone — its website is offline — and funding now runs as a suite of programs under the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment. "Music and sound" is an explicitly listed discipline throughout. The project funds ladder deliberately: the small project fund is first-come, first-served and open year-round to emerging and mid-career artists, while the medium grant runs juried intakes and requires a completed small project first. You climb the ladder by finishing and reporting on projects.

Travel, touring, and market access

Two artist-facing funds cover the market side directly: the Artist Travel and Touring Fund funds music performances, tours, showcases, pitches, and even out-of-territory studio recording when no NWT option exists (with a minimum equity contribution from the artist), and the Artist to Market Program subsidizes a sliding share of market-appearance costs that shrinks each time you participate — full support the first time, tapering as you establish yourself.

Applying

New NWT musicians start with the small project fund (apply early in the fiscal year — it's first-come, first-served until the budget runs out), graduate to the medium grant after completing a project, and use the travel fund for out-of-territory shows. Registration in the NWT Arts Program is a prerequisite for the market-access stream.
