Music funding in Manitoba

Manitoba has an unusually clean three-way split, and a funder whose program names tell you exactly what they do.

Manitoba Film & Music: the industry funder

Manitoba Film & Music is a crown agency covering both screen and sound, and it is the dedicated music-industry funder. Its music programs follow a memorable verb naming scheme — Produce (recording), Promote (marketing and music videos), Perform (touring) — with tiered support that grows once an artist has an MFM-funded release and a registered Manitoba business behind them. The touring and marketing programs run on rolling intake, so a Manitoba artist can apply when the tour or campaign is actually ready rather than waiting for a deadline window; recording intakes run on fixed dates a few times a year.

Manitoba Arts Council: the arts-council lane

The Manitoba Arts Council funds artists as artists under discipline-agnostic programs, and it is the rare funder that formally tiers its grant maxima by career stage — emerging, mid-career, and established artists have different ceilings. It also recognizes Indigenous Knowledge Keepers as an applicant category in their own right.

Manitoba Music: the association

Manitoba Music is a member-based, not-for-profit industry association with over 750 members. It funds nothing itself — its own funders include Manitoba Film & Music and FACTOR — but it provides the connective tissue: advocacy, professional development, showcases, export support, and a dedicated Indigenous Music Development Program. Its site doubles as province-wide music infrastructure, including the public live-music calendar this site draws on for Manitoba listings.

Applying

Commercial projects (a release, a tour, a campaign) go to Manitoba Film & Music; creative development goes to the Manitoba Arts Council; and Manitoba Music membership is how you plug into showcases and export opportunities either way.
