Music funding in British Columbia

BC has the richest provincial music-funding ecosystem in Canada, built around one big fund and an unusual delegation pattern.

Amplify BC, administered by Creative BC

Amplify BC is provincial government money — a multi-year investment running through 2027 — administered by Creative BC across seven streams. The streams span the whole industry: artist-facing money (career development covering recording, marketing and music videos; demo recording for new and emerging artists from systemically excluded groups), company-facing money, presenter-facing money (the Live Music stream funds venues and presenters, not artists), and sector-level initiatives. Each stream opens and closes on its own annual window, so the fund is best read as a calendar of intakes rather than an always-open door.

Music BC: association and administrator

Music BC is the membership association, but it is also a fund administrator — its travel grants deliver Creative BC and provincial money through the association. That delegation pattern is something Saskatchewan and Alberta don't have: joining the association and applying for its programs is, in effect, another route to provincial funding. Music BC also runs the public event calendar this site scrapes for BC community shows.

BC Arts Council: the arts-council lane

The BC Arts Council covers the artist-as-artist lane. Its performing artists stream is restricted to established artists — early-career musicians are served by separate development streams — and music is explicitly eligible across composition, production, and performance.

Applying

Artists early in their career should look at Amplify BC's artist streams and Music BC's travel support first; established artists add the BC Arts Council stream; and companies, venues, and presenters have their own dedicated Amplify streams rather than competing with artists for the same money.
