Music funding in Alberta

Alberta runs a two-body structure with a thinner provincial music-fund layer than its neighbours — there is no Alberta equivalent of BC's Amplify fund or Saskatchewan's Creative Saskatchewan music streams.

Alberta Foundation for the Arts: the primary funder

The Alberta Foundation for the Arts is the province's main arts granting body, and its music-specific individual project stream is the main provincial money available to musicians. It is notably broad for a single program: composition, demo and commercial recording (with a stated preference for Alberta studios), marketing of a commercial release, promotional tours, research, and training all qualify. If you are an individual Alberta musician looking for provincial support, this is almost always where the search starts — and often where it ends.

Alberta Music: the industry association

Alberta Music (the Alberta Music Industry Association) is the membership body, with offices in Edmonton and Calgary. It delivers export and showcase programming for members, and has run a Government of Alberta-funded travel grant pilot supporting showcases, tours, business meetings, and co-writing trips. Applying

Because the provincial layer is thin, Alberta musicians lean more heavily on federal programs — FACTOR in particular — than artists in BC or Manitoba do. A realistic Alberta funding stack is AFA project funding for the recording or tour itself, Alberta Music membership for showcase and export opportunities, and FACTOR for everything the province doesn't cover.
